Type Projects
I worked on several independent type design projects throughout 2024 and struggled a lot. So, I attended a type design workshop at Type@Cooper from October to December. The workshop was amazing; it helped me understand more of how type design works and gave me new insight into how I could improve my work.
My interest in type design and lettering goes back to my undergraduate years; I majored in linguistics and studied Japanese and Mandarin Chinese. My first formal introduction to writing studies or calligraphy was through Japanese calligraphy classes, which I took for over three years. I still like to create lettering projects in Japanese (or with Chinese characters), but now I want to focus more on type design for Roman alphabet-based languages.

Mika
Mika is the typeface I designed for the workshop "Principles of Typeface Design" through Type@Cooper. I designed a sans-serif typeface because I was interested in learning what goes into designing a typeface like this.

Blackletter Practice
I designed this lettering while taking the type design workshop as a separate personal project. The first part of the course covered writing basics, translation & expansion. It was my first time using a parallel pen and I fell in love with it. By referencing the how-to guide included in my parallel pen set I wrote and then enhanced these letters digitally.

きざみのり (Kizaminori)
Another project influenced by parallel pen writing. "Kizaminori" means shredded dried unseasoned seaweed in Japanese.I was randomly inspired to do this based on a trip to the grocery store, mostly because I liked the letterforms. The style is sharp, monolinear, and mechanical, which mimics the precise and consistent shreds of dried seaweed that have been industrially cut.

災厄です (Saiyaku desu)
In this lettering project, I was experimenting with blocky, unfinished forms. "Saiyaku" means disaster in Japanese.

Root 2
Root 2 is an independent project I did in order to gain a deeper grasp of basic design geometry. I created forms based on Root 2 proportions and relationships. It was a fun project that involved manipulating lots of shapes and discovering beautiful combinations & processes along the way. The animations illustrate these discoveries.

諸行無常 (Everything is Temporary)
Based on my calligraphy I digitized these characters in order to emphasize the sharp point endings and rounded curves of the calligraphy brush. 諸行無常 (ShyGyouMuJyou) is a Buddhist concept often translated as "impermanence" or "ephemeral".
